Artist's Description

Women played a key role in the Civil War. Most of the time they were camp followers, staying with their husbands or menfolk and tending to their needs. In some cases there is documented proof that some women dressed as men and fought alongside their husbands. This painting depicts one of the camp followers getting the wash tub ready. The reference photo was taken at a Civil War re-enactment in Charleston, SC.
