Artist's Description

Big Brother - Heavy bombers used against Germany were referred to as Big Brothers. This painting by Robert W. Wilson, Jr. depicts a B-17 Model G assigned to the 384th Bomb Group and flown by Lt. Wallace Storey on 30 November 1944. "678 Fox" and her sister ship, Pauline, are shown on their way back from a bombing run to Zeitz, an area of the oil refineries at Merseburg, Germany. The mission being depicted, Mission 233, was the Eighth Air Forces worst loss of the war due to enemy flak Lt. Storey had led a low section of 6 planes on that mission. His wing man blew up from a direct flak hit and the other five planes suffered major battle damage. A total of twenty-nine bombers and three escorting fighters were lost on that mission.
